Here, we will explore all of the types of malocclusion and what Dr. Andy can to do correct them!

What is Malocclusion?

Occlusion is another word for bite, or how the teeth fit together when the jaw is closed. When you go in for a free consultation with Dr. Andy, he will examine your occlusion and determine if the bite is correct, or if you have a malocclusion, which is an imperfection in the positioning of the teeth. A malocclusion is often occurs when the size of the teeth do not match the size of the jaws, or if a patient is missing teeth.

Types of Malocclusion

There are several types, or “classes” of malocclusion:

Class I malocclusion is the most common alignment abnormality that orthodontists face on a daily basis. In this type of malocclusion, the bite is normal, meaning that the upper and lower jaws align properly. Patients with a class I malocclusion often have crowding, spacing, or overlapping of the teeth. Treatment for a class I malocclusion often involves the use of braces and other orthodontic appliances.

Class II malocclusion is characterized by a lower jaw that is drawn more inwards than normal, which can cause the top teeth to appear to protrude forwards. A class II malocclusion is also commonly referred to as an overbite or retrognathism. Class II malocclusions can be treated with braces that are supported by a Forsus Appliance.

Class III malocclusion is often the most difficult malocclusion to correct. It is characterized by a lower jaw that juts more forward than normal, causing the lower teeth to overlap the top teeth. A class III malocclusion can also be called an underbite or mandibular prognathic. Class III malocclusions are best corrected with two-phase treatment.

Contact Dr. Andy Today

If you’re concerned that you or your child may have a malocclusion, or have any questions about the types of malocclusion, contact Dr. Andy’s office today.
