In this article, Dr. Andy in Parma, OH (just outside of Cleveland) addresses your orthodontic questions.<\/p>\n<h2>Dos and Don&#8217;ts of Getting Braces While Pregnant<\/h2>\n<p>With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skororthodontics.com\/adults.php\">adult orthodontics<\/a> on the rise, we will occasionally get patients who ask us about the \u2018dos\u2019 and \u2018don\u2019ts\u2019 of getting braces while pregnant. The good news is that in general, getting braces should have little, if any, impact on your pregnancy (and vice versa). That said, there are a few things that you should keep in mind when getting braces while pregnant:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pregnant women may have more sensitive teeth and gums due to hormonal changes that can cause increased blood flow. The heightened sensitivity on top of the normal orthodontic discomfort can sometimes be extra uncomfortable.<\/li>\n<li>An increase in estrogen and progesterone can affect the way your gums react to plaque, which leads to an increased risk of gum disease. This is typical for any pregnant woman, braces or no braces, and can be handled with diligent oral hygiene.<\/li>\n<li>You will want to be sure to avoid getting any x-rays during your orthodontic treatment. Be sure to let your orthodontist know about your pregnancy and he or she should be able to work around any necessary x-rays.<\/li>\n<li>If you need one or more teeth pulled in order for you to get braces, it may be a good idea to hold off on the treatment until after you\u2019ve had your baby. The anesthesia used during the tooth extraction process may not be good for you or your baby.<\/li>\n<li>Some women who experience morning sickness during pregnancy have a tough time with braces as it may limit your ability to use elastic bands or retainer properly. Do be sure to brush your teeth thoroughly after getting sick because if left on your teeth, the acid can do some serious damage, especially since caring for teeth with braces can be more challenging.<\/li>\n<li>Keep in mind that getting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skororthodontics.com\/traditional-braces.php\">traditional metal braces<\/a> does limit the foods you can eat.
