If you’re new to wearing braces, you may find the restrictions on what you can eat a little overwhelming. However, if you eat foods that aren’t recommended by your orthodontist, you run the risk of damaging the brackets and wires that hold your braces together. This could result in extending the length of time you need to wear the braces.
Dr. Andy is here to help! We’ve compiled a list of the foods to avoid and foods that are okay to eat with braces.
Foods to Avoid with Braces
Be smart and follow your orthodontist’s instructions. Don’t eat foods that are sticky, crunchy, hard, tough, gooey, chewy, or high in sugar. It’s really just about using common sense. Some examples of foods to avoid with braces include:
- Popcorn
- Nuts and seeds
- Sticky and hard candy
- Taffy
- Ice
- Pizza crust
- Chunky peanut butter
- Corn chips
- Pretzels
- Beef jerky
Avoid biting into hard foods with your front teeth. You can still enjoy these types of foods by simply cutting them into small pieces and chewing with your back teeth. It’s also important to brush your teeth after every meal.
Foods that Are okay to eat with braces
Although there are foods you should avoid with braces, soft foods are much easier on the hardware in your mouth. Be sure that what you’re eating constitutes a healthy, nutritious diet. Some examples of foods that are okay to eat include:
- Bananas
- Cheese
- Applesauce
- Pasta (mac and cheese!)
- Mashed potatoes
- Tuna
- Meatloaf
- Cooked vegetables
- Melons
- Yogurt
