Overcoming Your Fear of the Dentist

Are you one of the millions of Americans who have a fear of the dentist? If so, you are not alone. An estimated 10% of adults have anxiety about going to the dentist.  The good news is, there are many effective techniques you can use to overcome your fear, and protect your teeth and health.

Find an understanding dentist

The dental office should have a calming effect on you. A good dentist will make you feel like they care about you, explain procedures before performing them, and go slowly. You should feel free to alert the dentist if you are uncomfortable or need a break. Feeling in control keeps anxiety at bay.

Early appointment

If your anxiety grows throughout the day, an early dental appointment will prevent escalating fears. Get it out of the way early.

Bring someone you trust

Bring a friend for moral support, one who doesn’t fear the dentist. They may be able to sit with you throughout your appointment.

Distraction

According to the American Journal of Dentistry, sounds in the dental office are a trigger for anxiety. Listening to music or an audio book keeps you calm. Blocking upsetting noises helps you to relax.

Sedation options

Review sedation options with your dentist. Those may include nitrous oxide (laughing gas), local anesthetic, or oral sedatives. Your dentist will want your treatments to be as pain free as possible.

Practice prevention

The best way to avoid anxiety-producing procedures is to take excellent care of your teeth. Daily brushing and flossing will go a long way to keeping your teeth and gums healthy. It is important to visit your dentist for regular dental cleanings to keep your mouth in optimal oral health. This helps prevent cavities, gingivitis and periodontal disease.
