Tooth gap and diastema treatment

What Are My Options for Diastema Treatment?

A diastema is a gap between two or more teeth, often occurring between the two front permanent teeth of kids. This gap typically occurs when the size of the teeth don’t match up with the size of the jaw, causing the teeth to grow in with a space between them. Thankfully, diastema treatment is available! Read on for more information from Dr. Andy, in Parma, OH (just outside of Cleveland).

A diastema can also occur when constant pressure is applied to the teeth, such as sucking a thumb. Periodontal disease is another contributing factor to the formation of a diastema, as the teeth may lose bone and become loose.

Diastema Treatment Options

A diastema doesn’t typically go away on its own, unless your child is still in the process of losing his or her baby teeth. In this case, sometimes the permanent teeth shift into their proper position as more grow in. Usually, though, a diastema requires treatment to be corrected. Here’s a look at your diastema treatment options:

  • Orthodontics – Braces are really your best bet for correcting a diastema. Metal braces, hidden braces, and Invisalign can shift teeth into correct alignment to remove the unnecessary gap. Your orthodontist may recommend the use of elastic rubber bands to help move the teeth closer together in an efficient manner.
  • Cosmetic bonding, veneers, or crowns – Sometimes, if the teeth simply aren’t wide or large enough to fill the space, your dentist might recommend a cosmetic procedure such as tooth bonding, a process in which the dentist will apply a tooth-colored resin to the teeth. Other cosmetic diastema treatment options include attaching porcelain veneers, or capping the teeth with crowns.
